What Cane Should I Use After Knee Replacement?

How to choose and prepare a cane for recovery after knee replacement surgery.

This article is general information to help you prepare. Your surgeon and physical therapist know your recovery best, so always follow their guidance on which mobility aid to use and when.

Short answer

Most people use a walker first after knee replacement, then move to a cane when their physical therapist says they're ready. A single-point cane, adjusted to the right height, with a comfortable handle and a non-slip tip works for most people. If you need more stability at first, your therapist may suggest a quad cane. Have the cane ready before your surgery.

Get the height right before surgery

Measure while standing straight in the shoes you'll wear during recovery: the top of the cane should line up with the crease of your wrist with your arm relaxed. An adjustable cane is the easiest choice, since footwear and posture often change as you heal. See our sizing guide.

Which hand should hold the cane?

Most therapists teach holding the cane in the hand opposite your new knee, and moving the cane forward together with the operated leg. Your therapist will show you the right technique for walking and for stairs. Read Which Hand Should You Hold Your Cane In?
